By Liz Carey of Independentmail.com
ANDERSON COUNTY — There will be explosions and military trucks on the streets of Anderson County, but it won’t be real.
In the weeks of June 8 through June 20, Anderson County emergency response teams — from law enforcement units and fire departments to emergency management workers and the coroner’s office — will participate in a mock terrorist attack in the Anderson area. [Read more →]

GOP Primary Ballot Questions
This year, the SCGOP has added two questions to the June 8 primary ballot. The questions are only ADVISORY in nature, and carry no effect in law. The text of the questions is as follows:
Advisory Question 1 – The healthcare reform bill recently signed into law by President Obama requires all American citizens to purchase health insurance or else to pay a fine to the federal government. The legislation also contains tax benefits and other inducements that apply only to certain states, benefits that were apparently designed to persuade those states’ Senators or Representatives to vote for President Obama’s healthcare reform Bill.
Therefore, be it resolved: The South Carolina General Assembly should defend the freedom of all South Carolinians to make their own healthcare decisions by enacting legislation making it illegal to force the citizens of South Carolina to purchase health insurance or participate in a healthcare plan against their will, or to comply with any of the provisions or mandates of nationalized healthcare that do not apply equally to all states.
Do you agree with the resolution above?
Yes
No
Advisory Question 2 – Growth of state spending should not exceed the growth of the economy.
Therefore, be it resolved: The South Carolina General Assembly should enact legislation to limit state spending growth in South Carolina to a growth rate not to exceed the lesser of the annual percentage growth in income of the State’s citizens, or the growth in population plus inflation.
Do you agree with the resolution above?
Yes
No

Obama Finance Bill Will Allow Seizure of Companies
By Dick Morris & Eileen McGann of newsmax.com
President Barack Obama has taken the United States one more giant step towards socialism by ramming through the Senate his financial regulation bill.
The bill authorizes the secretary of the Treasury — a political appointee — to seize any financial company (bank or nonbank) simply because, in his opinion, it is too big to fail and in danger of insolvency.
This power can be used for political retribution, pressure for campaign funding, or any other abuse bureaucratic whim or partisan politics can conceive. It is a power Fidel Castro or Hugo Chavez would love to have! [Read more →]

Please read the article below and take the following survey. It is important that we need send a clear message that any such regional growth plan needs to be market-driven and protect private property rights. The deadline for the survey is the end of the day tomorrow. Click here to take the survey.
By John Staed of IndependentMail.com
ANDERSON — A new regional economic development and cultural support group wants to know what area residents think about growth.
The survey seeks ideas from development of new subdivisions to retaining farmland to transportation issues.
Ten at the Top is launching its Regional Vision Survey from Monday to May 31 to seek answers on what residents want for growth, land use, natural and cultural resources and education, according to a statement.
Results of the survey will be reported during a regional summit Sept. 28, followed by community forums in each of the 10 counties represented by Ten at the Top. A “vision” strategy will be completed in the first quarter of 2011, then presented to communities across the Upstate.
The survey is available online at www.sharedupstatevision.org, in printed form at municipal buildings, hospitals and libraries in the 10 Upstate counties, or by calling 864-283-2315. Counties represented include Abbeville, Anderson, Cherokee, Greenville, Greenwood, Laurens, Oconee, Pickens, Spartanburg and Union.
The survey was developed through the Appalachian Council of Governments and the Metropolitan Studies Institute at USC-Upstate.
“Input from Upstate residents is vital to creating a regional growth vision,” said Irv Welling, chairman of Ten at the Top.

Chellis deputy campaigning for him on taxpayers’ dime, time
By Lane Filler of goupstate.com
It is not unusual for political candidates to be accompanied by campaign staffers when they come in for a sit-down with our editorial board, so it wasn’t particularly surprising when State Treasurer Converse Chellis walked in Monday afternoon around 3:30 with Scott Malyerck. I’ve been running into Malyerck, an omnipresent political operative in Republican circles, for years.
“You work for the Treasurer’s Office?” I asked Malyerck. [Read more →]

Investigation finds illegal workers at Pickens school project
By John C. Stevenson of Greenvilleonline.com
EASLEY — “Illegal, unauthorized workers” have been found on at least one of the sites in the School District of Pickens County’s $365 million Building Futures program, according to an incomplete state investigation.
Jim Knight, director of the office of communications for the state Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, told The Greenville News “we have determined that there are illegal, unauthorized workers working on some of the projects there in Pickens County.”
Knight did not say which construction site or contractor or subcontractor was involved; however, school board chairman Jim Shelton said he had learned the site involved is that of the new Pickens High School. [Read more →]

We Need Letters To The Editor on H.3047 – Time is running out!
H.3047 is stalled in a Senate Committee. Senators McConnel, Knotts and Martin, the three big bullies of the Senate, are trying to run the clock out on us. After this week, there are only two more weeks before the session ends for 2010.
They have introduced S.1437, a rules change which would be worse than no recorded vote at all. Unless we put pressure on these guys, we will not get transparency this year.
Please take a few minutes to write a letter to editor of one or more of the newspapers listed below (and/or any other paper you know of). Letters should be concise, 200 words or less in order to increase the likelihood of their getting published. Include your full name, city and daytime phone number as the editors may want to call you to confirm your submission.
After you send you letter, please post it in the comments section below, and also forward it to your Senator, and to Senators McConnell, Knotts and Martin. (Click here to find their contact info.)
Thank you for your involvement! It really does make a difference.
If you need any further information about this issue, please contact Jonathon at jhill@andersonteaparty.com, or me (Priscilla) at wavetheflag@compright.com

Fate of “24 hours for life” bill is uncertain
By Senator Kevin Bryant from his Blog From The Back Bench

H3245 is a bill requiring a 24 hour waiting period before a mother can obtain an abortion. The conference committee (Sen. Brad Hutto, Sen. Jake Knotts, Rep. Greg Delleney, Rep. Ted Vick, Rep. Wendy Nanny, and myself) has been meeting for several weeks now.
Here’s a summary of the hangups.
Provider of ultrasounds
The Senate version gives the mother the choice of obtaining the optional ultrasound from a variety of sources (abortion clinic, crisis pregnancy clinic, family doctor, ob/gyn, etc.). The House version only allows for the abortion clinic to provide the ultrasound.
Printed materials
The Senate version gives the option of viewing the materials on the internet, receiving in the mail, or picking them up at the abortion clinic. The House version requires the mother to obtain the materials from the abortion clinic. [Read more →]
